Green-e® Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates for Your Organization
A REC is created for each megawatt-hour (1MWh, or 1000 kilowatt-hours) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the power grid. RECs provide buyers with flexibility in purchasing green power across a diverse geographical area. Each MWh of renewable electricity reduces the need for one MWh of conventional electricity, avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions and other negative environmental factors related to conventional electricity generation.
Using energy efficiently through more efficient end-uses or through more efficient generation, such as combined heat and power, reduces the amount of fuel required to produce a unit of energy output and reduces the corresponding emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases. Electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro-power, bio-mass, landfill gas, and geo-thermal generally do not contribute to climate change or local air pollution since no fuels are combusted in these processes.
Benefits of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
There are major benefits of purchasing RECs:
- Environmental - reduce environmental impacts, improving the overall quality of life buy participating in a cleaner environment
- Financial - manages electricity price volatility (buyers will have protection against unstable or rising fossil fuel prices, example through long-term, fixed-price supply contracts directly with developers or generators).
- Additional environmental regulation - to address global climate change and regional air quality issues, federal and state regulations could effectively increase the price of conventional electricity, making green power financially more attractive for organizations.
- Establishes strong stakeholder relations
